Reflection Removal in Photoshop

About a year ago, I showed a sneak from Adobe MAX of reflection removal from a photo. These sneaks are experimental features Adobe Engineers show off that may or may not make it into a product. Since then, many people have asked if this will make its way into Lightroom or Photoshop.

Reflection Removal is available today as a technology preview in Camera Raw. I’ll show you how to activate and use it in this tutorial. Currently it only works on RAW files. Adobe have said they are working on supporting other file formats as well as Lightroom support. That will all be coming soon. Ok, let’s look at reflection removal.

Enabling Reflection Removal in Camera RAW

First of all, update Photoshop to the newest version. This is in regular Photoshop, you don’t need the beta for this one.

Launch Camera RAW (by opening any image. Filter>Camera RAW).

Choose the gear in the top Right.

Click Technology Previews and turn on New ai Features and Settings Panel. (Technology Previews are beta for Camera Raw).

Restart Photoshop for this to take effect.

Using Reflection Removal

In Camera Raw, here is a photo of a train interior, shooting through the glass.

Click the Eraser icon

Turn on Reflections from the Distraction Removal panel.

Instantly, the reflections are gone and the contrast has been increased as if the glass wasn’t even there.

There are some things it works on better than others. It works best on Plate glass at the moment and struggles with smaller things like eyeglasses. Let’s continue to see how it works as well as other limitations.

Notice the reflection slider is at 100. This is completely the image without reflections.

If you slide the Reflection filter to the Left (-100), you will see just the reflections.

This uses ai to understand what is the reflection and what is the subject and separates the 2. This does not use Generative AI and it doesn’t generate anything that isn’t in the picture.

If you move the slider to 0, it will show the original image.

The reflection removal works well for glass and things like shooting through airplane and car windows, hotel windows, storefronts etc. It also works well for photos and framed pictures behind glass.

It doesn’t currently work well for images with specular highlights where the details are blown out, because the ai can’t currently understand an area where there is no pixel detail. It also doesn’t work will for brightly lit night scenes.

Here is a picture of a younger me on the nVidea Speak Visual campaign a few years ago. Lets run it on this image.

Notice it removes the reflections, but didn’t remove the specular highlights from the light source.

Take the same picture without specular highlights and run it again,

A much cleaner result.

I’ll keep you updated as this feature progresses. Subscribe to our newsletter to get updates.

Thanks

Colin

3D is back in Photoshop, but it’s different. Substance 3D Viewer

As many people are aware, Photoshop used to support a pretty decent 3D feature set. These were beefed up in Photoshop CS6 Extended and continued through CC for a number of years. See tutorials on Photoshop 3D here. Adobe started to retire these features because of changes in Direct X and other technologies. This tutorial, shows how to keep legacy 3D working in Photoshop.

I think the most common way people used it, was to composite 3D objects into Photoshop. The advantage of 3D is the ability to change the angle and lighting to make everything match perfectly. Another thing I loved about the 3D was the ability to animate different properties.

3D is back, but in a different way. By Using the new Substance 3D viewer, you are able to position your objects, light and texture them in a much more powerful way than before. You can even generate 3D objects from text. What you don’t have is the ability to interact with the 3D objects, directly in Photoshop, nor the ability to animate the 3D. All that said, for compositing, the results are better than ever, lets take a look.

Getting Set up

At the time of this writing (it will change in the future), this feature is only supported in the Beta Version of Photoshop.

In the creative Cloud App, choose apps>beta and install Photoshop.

You will also need to install Substance 3D viewer beta. This will also install a plugin in Photoshop beta.

Free 3D library

While you are in Creative Cloud app, click on 3D & AR

You will see Substance 3D assets. Click to go to the page, it will open in your web browser.

Here you can download a number of different assets, including models, procedural textures and lighting models. I clicked on the sofa and choose download.

Open an image in Photoshop and Drag and drop the 3D model into Photoshop.

It will appear as a Smart Object layer.

Either double click the smart object, or choose Edit Contents

Substance 3D viewer will appear with your composition in the window.

You can easily position and scale the 3D object, by right, left or middle mouse button dragging. (More in the video at the top).

Position the object. Click to Photoshop and the image in Photoshop will update to match what you see here. This is where the nice integration takes place.

Choose the environment button on the left-bar. (lightbulb icon). Now you can adjust the Lighting to match the angle of the photograph.

Click on light presets to change the lighting environment, you can also load in your own HDR image and use that. This sets the light color and reflections.

Click the texture icon. This is where you change the textures and materials (a material is a texture preset). Here I increased the roughness to make the cushions look more like velvet. You can change many things about the textures.

You can choose a different diffuse color, here we made the cushions red.

If you want to use once of the material presets. click on Material presets and a panel will appear.

Drag the material onto the object. Here I used a velvet preset.

Notice a blue bar appears and says:

Replace all instances: Which will replace all the cushions, or whatever objects are grouped together, or

Apply to all Objects: Will apply the material to the entire 3D model.

Notice all the cushions receive the new preset.

All the properties can be changed including the color. We went for red again, as it matches this scene nicely.

If you choose the bottom-left icon this takes you to the generative window. Here I added the text prompt Victorian Ballroom. Substance uses the 3D object (this is the way I positioned it in 3D space) and generates a background based on the prompt. I made a tut on generative ai and 3D in Substance viewer here.

When you are happy with your 3D model, click the Ray tracing button to render it.

When happy, click To Photoshop in the top Right.

Go back to Photoshop and the image is updated to Match what’s in Substance viewer. To change it, go back to Substance viewer, or double click the smart object. It’s really easy and fun.

Hopefully you found this week’s free Photoshop tutorial useful!

Great to see you here at the CAFE.

How to Generate 3D in Adobe Substance Viewer

This tutorial is looking at Adobe’s newest app, Substance 3D viewer. This app can integrate with Photoshop (I’m working on that tutorial next). Substance viewer can be used to apply textures and enviroments to 3D model and position them for placement into photoshop. Substance viewer also has the ability to generate actual 3D models from text prompts. This actually came out of one the sneaks at Adobe Max in 2023. This is a Quick Look, watch the video for more in-depth feature walk through.

Substance viewer is currently in beta and available for free.

How to Gert Substance 3D viewer

go to the Creative Cloud ap.

Click on beta.

You will see Substance 3D viewer.

Download it to your Mac or PC.

Once you launch Substance 3D viewer, you’ll see a welcome screen.

Ill go over all the features in another tutorial, let’s look at the Generative ai capabilities in this tut.

Click in the top right thumbnail that says: Create 3D model with text prompts.

You’ll see 2 options on the left. Choose text to 3D

Type in rotary telephone and generate.

This is an actual 3D model that can be tumbled and scaled.

It may not look like an amazing 3D model, but it serves a very important purpose for Generative ai.

Up until now, you have been able to generate with text prompts and reference images. You can sort of get what you want, but you are limited by existing photos.

With 3D, you now have the ability of get exactly the angles you want, by positioning the 3D model. I really think, this will become a very important part of generative ai in the future.

We can now. choose 3D model to image. Add your desired prompts and let the 3D model guide the main object.

phone on wooden desk. This phone, looks very similar to the 3D model, but this is now a rendered image.

Change the prompt to say plastic phone.

You can adjust the sensitivity to determine how closely you want to match the 3D object.

You can also bring in your own 3D models.

Here is a model of a DC3 that I created in Blender and exported as an .obj.

If you want, you can also apply a texture to your model using the materials. I’ll do another tut on that.

Now, I can enter a text prompt and use the 3D model that I built by hand.

Airplane at airfield.

And an image is generated to match the 3D model. Yes, its still got a ways to go, because it wanted to turn this into a jetted its far from perfect, but I like the direction it’s heading.

There are different ways we can generate too. If we choose Generate a new Look for my Model, it will make a texture for the model

You cn see it here. It’s still trying to make a jet engine, but it’s impressive that it was able to texture this well. If you have ever made UV textures for 3D models, you know how hard it is.

Let’s use a more simple model provided by Adobe.

Lets use this toaster.

We can generate an isolated subject with texture. This can be useful for compositing. I’ll show you how to bring this back into Photoshop in the next tutorials in this series.

We can add a prompt and generate a realistic image of breakfast in the kitchen from this 3D model.

I hope you found this intro to Substance Viewer interesting and useful.

Let me know, if you want to see more tut on this. (Im planning on doing one on Substance Viewer and Photoshop integration.)

Thanks

Colin

New Remove Tool options in Photoshop

Adobe has added an important new setting to the Remove tool. This allows use to choose if we want to use Ai. This is important for a couple of reason we will get into.  Also, autos elections, usually don’t wreck well with generative ai and the remove tool, but I have a trick for you. Lets go!

Generative ai mode

If you have used Photoshop beta, you might have noticed this new mode option for the Remove tool.

You will see a mode and the option to use Generative ai, or never, or Auto. The remove tool works better with Generative ai, as you will see in this tut. But I can think of 3 reasons why you might prefer not to use it.

1/ You are running low on Generative Credits. You are allocated a number of credits each month and ranges from 200 to 1000 depending on your subscription package. See info on these at the Adobe Website, This doesn’t mean you will be charged automatically if you run out. You may experience a slowdown. If you want to bypass the slowdown, you can purchase more credits. I’ll do a whole piece on Gen credits, if people want me to.

2/ Second reason to turn off Generative ai, maybe you don’t want your work to be flagged as ai when you upload it to Social Media.

3/ Third reason is resolution, if you are working on a large area, it may appear soft because of the limited resolution of Generative Fill.

So, you can use the drop down to change these options. Personally, I leave it at auto. This way I get the best possible result from the remove tool.

Ok, let’s jump into the tutorial.

Let’s remove these boats just as a working example.

With the remove tool, paint a selection over the boats

Use, always, just so we know it’s using Fen ai on this step.

As you would expect, pretty close to perfect.

If we change it to Never, you can see the result without Generative ai is unusable. (Yes, we know you can use other tools such as content aware fill, clone stamp., patch tool, even an ant with the erase tool attached to its foot. OK, maybe not an ant, the point being, this is a tut about the remove tool, not how best to remove the boats.). If you cane the option to never, make sure you are using the remove tool on easier subjects, or in smaller increments, and don’t use a selection in those cases.

How to use auto selections with Generative ai

By default there are some excellent selection tools in Photoshop, but they don’t work well off the bat. Usually because the selection it too tight.

We can just paint over the boats, like we didi earlier in this tutorial, but there are times when you need to be really careful.

Here we are using the Object finder with the Object selection tool to make a selection.

Paint over the selection with the remove tool

When we apply the Remove, it looks weird because the selection was too tight around the boats.

We have 2 options.

This first, is what we usually do. Before using the Remove tool, choose Select>MOdify>Expand and expand the selection by 25 pixels.

This gives us this result, which will work much better.

Option #2, the easy way

Lets look at another alternative option.

We made a new layer to apply the remove tool on (you can see it in the video).  If I hide the layer underneath, you can see that the remove tool (generative ai actually) creates a border around the generated pixel and also applies a feature to blend it in.

If you Ctrl/Cmd+Click on that layer you can load the selection

Make a new layer and then apply the Remove tool to this new selection and you will great results. Not only do you have an edge expansion, but it’s also featured, so it will work better than the Select>Modify>Expand option.

And you can see we get a great result.

I hope you found this tutorial useful

Thanks

Colin

How good is the Photoshop Auto Remove Wires tool?

Hi everyone!

Last week we looked at the new auto remove people and auto remove power lines in Photoshop. Currently in Photoshop beta, see how to get the Photoshop BETA here.

I had a few comments saying the wire removal was too easy, because it had a simple background.

This week, we try the remove tool on a number of challenging images, and I really try to break it. Let’s see how well it does, shall we? We go through each image in the video, let’s see what the challenge is on each image.

This is a a clear sky, simple background, but there are a lot of wires.

This appears simple. But, I wonder how it will manage the contrails in the sky. Will it think they are wires too?

More complex wires

The downed wires have a difficult background with the trees

This night shot has mixed low light and low contrast lighting, as well as haze and flares.

Maybe the ai isn’t trained as well on an aerial view.

Then, lastly, we will unleash the Kraken! Can it fix this impossible image?

Check out the video and see how well Photoshop can remove these power lines using the new ai wire Remove tool.

People asked about a second pass, so I tried that too and made a 1 min video here

Good to see you here.

Instantly remove crowds of people and wires from photos in Photoshop in 1 click

There is a new feature in Photoshop (Currently only in Photoshop beta, at the time of this writing).

This is an extension of the excellent Removal tool, but it highlights the people automatically and allows you to choose if you want to remove them automatically. It also automatically removes power lines. Let’s have a look.

Let’s begin with this image which has lots of people.

Choose the Remove Tool

For best practice create a new layer (This makes it work non-destructively on a new layer, so we can change it later).

Make sure Sample all layers is on, or nothing will happen on the new layer and it won’t work.

Click on Fin Distractions

Start with people, click on people

You will see all the people are highlighted.

Press the enter key to apply the remove tool and it will remove all the people.  (We will look at more options for this in just a moment).

This image also has some bales at the top.

This time press Wires and Cables.

And it instantly removes the cables. Yes, this was an easy wire removal, my next tutorial I’ll test it with very difficult images and we will see just how good it is, or isn’t 🙂

Removing people when it’s not perfect.

I clicked people removal on this image.

Notice we have a 1/2 car and a bike with no rider. Let’s fix this.

Choose Remove people and let the ai add the highlights.

Notice at the top left, there is a + and – button? We can manually add to, or take away from selected areas.

If you hold down Alt/Option, it will go into the minus or remove mode.

In the remove mode, or minus (hold down alt/Option) Paint the selection away from the woman in the umbrella, we want to keep her.

Paint on the rest of the bicycle to add more selection to the entire object. Use the miss on the post.

This time when we apply the removal, it removes the bicycle as well as the rider. Watch the video to see this in operation.

I hope you found this week’s tutorial helpful!

Converting Photos to art with Ai in Photoshop

There’s a cool hack that allows you to convert photos to paintings and a lot more using Generative Fill and a 20% selection.

It was a well known hack, but I took it further.  I encourage you to look at the tutorial as it shows a lot of detail and options not in this tutorial.

This stopped working somewhere with Photoshop 2024. The reason, density was broken in Generative Fill. The good news is, it’s working again in the Main Version of Photoshop (It currently does not work with Photoshop Beta). But there are some new features that work with this trick, that weren’t available before.

Set up Photoshop.

First thing, let’s get our settings right.

Double click the Quick Mask button

This Brings up the options. Choose Selected areas.

Click ok

Converting to a Painting using Quick Mask.

Let’s do an overall adjustment. We will start with Quick mask. If you can, read or watch ENTIRE tutorial. There is important info I don’t want you to miss and we are covering multiple techniques, it’s important for you to see it all.

Open your picture.

Choose Quick Mask. Q key

Click on Foreground Color.

Choose the (B) Option, this is Brightness. Enter 80. 80% White will give us 20% Black. This is the Density we are choosing: 20%.

Click OK

Fill with the Foreground color. Option+Delete on Mac, or Alt+Backspace on Windows

You will see a pink color.

Exit Quick Mask mode by tapping the Q key once again.

You probably won’t see the selection, Marching Ants because it’s less than 50% selected and they don’t show up, but the selection is active.

Click on Generative Fill in the Task Bar

Enter Painting (You could use other things, such as sketch, oil painting, watercolor etc.)

Click Generate

You will see we now have an art look over the photo.

Converting a Photo to art with the Selection Brush

Let’s look at the 2nd method, which will work fine for this simple example, but when we need more control later, I’ll point something out to you.

Choose the Selection Brush. Change the Opacity to 20.

Make the brush size really large. (Its the setting to the right of the Opacity.)

Paint over the entire image

Type in Painting to the Generative Fill and press enter.

As you can see, it’s really easy and quick using the Selection Brush, but only for a simple conversion.

Partial Adjustment

Now we are going to do a partial adjustment. We want to change the background to a Watercolor. We will start with the Selection Brush. You need to see what happens to learn something, then we will use the Quick Mask for this example and you will see why its better in this more complex adjustment.

Choose the Selection Brush and choose 20% for opacity and paint over the background.

Lets clean up the edges where we have gone over.

Choose the Subtract option for the brush and a smaller size.

Also increase the Amount to 100% because his is the cleanup brush.

Paint away the edges and clean up the mask.

Type watercolor in the Generative Fill box in the Taskbar.

Click Generate

The result looks good, but..

You may wonder why I didn’t use Select Subject, or any other selection tools to help?

When you use other selections tools, you need to first turn on those tools to make the selection, ok, Captain Obvious.

When you choose the Selection Brush, it converts the selected area into a Mask. Perfect.. BUT..

No matter what you set the Brush Opacity to, an active selection will always be 100% when you click on the Selection Brush. So, only selections painted with the Selection Brush can be a different opacity. Yeah, that sucks.

If you want to use other selections tools, you need to use the Quick Mask. (This is one reason, I’m not a huge fan of the Selection Brush. It’s better to use Quick Masks for anything but the most basic selections with the Selection Brush.

Using Quick Mask to do a Partial Effect

The Good news, its not hard to do this with the Quick Mask, Learn this and you will be set.

The First thing you need to do is ENABLE Quick mask, Either tap the Q key, or click the button in the toolbar.

We can use selections in the Quick Mask mode.

Choose the Object Selection Tool.

Click Select Subject.

It now selects our person.

If select subject can’t find a subject, do this: Open the Channels Panel. Click on RGB at the top. Now use object selection. When the selection is made, click on Quick Mask in the Channels again and continue.

We need to Inverse the selection and choose everything but the Person AKA our Background.

Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I to Inverse (swap) the selection.

Choose a Foreground color.

Under the (B) set it to 80% like we did before.

Click ok.

Fill with Foreground color.  Option+Delete / Alt+Backspace on Windows.

Notice the pink color fills the background, but not our person, because of the selection we made.

Turn off the selection by Pressing The Ctrl/Cmd+D key.

Leave Quick Mask Mode, tap the Q key.

In the task Bar, enter watercolor under Generate

Click Generate and now we have just the background converted to a water color, while our person remains a photo.

For the more complex tasks that require additional selections, use the Quick mask method.

The Selection Brush works fine for the simple tasks. (To be honest, I don’t see myself using the Selection Brush all that often, but we will see.)

I hope you found this tutorial useful!

Adobe updated Photoshop 25.11 in July 2024. Here are the new features and how to use them.

In some cases, these features have already appeared in the beta version of Photoshop and I have already made tutorials on them. In those cases, I’ll provide a brief overview of the feature here, so this tutorial is complete. I will also provide a link to th more in-depth tutorial, so you can learn the feature in more detail.

Selection Brush Tool

This feature is entirely new(ish). While it’s a new feature, the Selection Brush is just basically a dumbed down version of Quick Mask.

You use the selection Brush, to paint on a selection. When you choose another tool, the painted area will be turned into a section. What makes this tool unique, is its ability to create a soft edged selection, and also with a different level of transparency. (This can also be done with Quick Mask, but with more control). The selection brush has no edge detection and works like a paintbrush.

The Selection Brush is nested with the lasso tool.

At the top, you can chan choose transparency as well as brush softness.

Paint on the image where you want to make a selection.

If you choose a different tool, the pink area will turn into a section.

In this case, lets do something more interesting to highlight the soft edges selection.

Click on new layer mask

A mask is created with a soft edge and also semi transparent.

You can see this makes in interesting looking mask.

Let’s inverse the mask, Click on the layer masks

Ctrl/Cmd+I to invert it.

Choose another image and drag it into the tab on the image we are working on.

This enables us to combine images into a collage. See how the soft edges selection works in this case.

Here is a basic tutorial on combining images and making collages in photoshop if you don’t know how to do this.

Using the Selection Brush with Generative Fill

Here is a more useful way to use the selection brush.

Lower the opacity to 20%

transparency in adjustment brush

Paint in the area you want to generate a shark.

paint with selection brush

In the Contextual Task Bar, type in Shark and click Generate.

Because the Brush opacity was reduced to 20% it generates a low density, making the shark appear underwater.

In my opinion, this tool is a bit redundant and you are better off learning how to use Quick mask Tool. But it’s easy for beginners, who may get some use out of it.

Adjustment Brush updates

I have made tutorials on the Photoshop Adjustment Brush before. But is has some updates here.

First, it’s been places into its own slot in the toolbar. It used to be nested with the Brush tool. The problem with the nesting, when you tap the B key for Brush, you would get the Adjustment brush instead of the paintbrush and this messed up workflows, as well as actions.

Now you have options in the Taskbar including Brush hardness and size. (I’m still hoping for pen pressure).

Paint on your photo to apply the adjustment.

To be a little blunt, I sort of Group this tool with the Selection brush, a bit redundant for users other than new users, as the Adjustment Layer Masks can do the same thing with more control.

But here is a different way the Adjustment Brush works that is useful.

If you want to extend the adjustment, choose the Object selection tool and make a selection.(You can see this on the video at the top).

The adjustment is automatically extended to the selected area.

Shapes, strokes and fill

The shape tools have a boost and the features are available in the Task Bar, making this once-annoying floating bar a little more useful and endearing itself with more users. Let me know in the comments, do you like the task bar?

Grab the rectangular shape tool. Make sure you have shape as the option at the top left of the top toolbar.

Make a selection.

Notice you can change the fill and stoke colors, as well as change the roundness by dragging on the dots in the corners.

Tap the curve in the task bar and notice you can also change the corner roundness here.

change outline color

If you desire, you can change the roundness of individual corners.

Bullets and Numbering

This simple feature appears to be the favorite of a lot of people, myself included.

When you make text lists, you had to manually create bullets with the circle tool and align them to the image. No longer!

With the type tool active, Click the tool options.

Look at the bottom left corner of the Paragraph panel.

Make sure you select your type first.

add bullets and numbers

Click on Bullets and lookie!

It’s small, but huge at the same time and long overdue.

If you chose numbers, it will add a numbered list, or convert the bullets to numbers.

Enhance image on Generative Fill

When you use Generative fill, you get a maximum resolution of 1024px x 1024px stretched out over the Generated area. This tool is added from Photoshop beta and now in shipping version.

If the generated area is larger than 1k, you will see an icon in the variation Thumbnail. Click this to enhance the appearance of the generated pixels.

I have created and entire tutorial on Enhancing resolution on Generative Fill, where I show you exactly what this does and how it works, as well as tips to boost the resolution in any generated image.

Text To image, Generate Image

This next feature, is also moved over from Photoshop Beta, aka the real Version of Photoshop (Shipping? They don’t actually ship) or whatever we are calling the regular version of Photoshop.

At the bottom of the toolbar you will see a new icon. If the icon is missing, here’s the fix

The new icon is for Generate Image, or Text to Image. You have to have a document open for this to work. If it’s grayed out, create a new document first, or open an existing one.

Text to image new feature

Here you can generate images from text prompts and they are using Adobe Firefly version 3.

I’m not going Ito this as I show how it works on the video, and I have previously made an in-detail tutorial on Photoshop Generative Image/ Text to Image.

Hopefully this article was useful and helped you get up to date on the newest Photoshop Features. In case you didn’t know, I have an archive of ALL the Photoshop and Lightroom features as they were added in the Superguide. See what features you may have missed.

Great to see you at the CAFE
